Understanding Common Noises From a Water Heater

A water heater stands among the most frequently used appliance in a household. It heats cold water whenever needed to make routine tasks like showering and washing clothes and dishes more convenient. As a water heater manages a heavy workload day in and day out, especially during the winter months, it is common for it to run into issues.

Like other mechanical devices, a water heater makes some noise while functioning. However, a water heater can sometimes make noises more serious than others indicating a severe problem that may require attention. Understanding the typical water heater noises and what they mean can help homeowners avoid expensive repairs and replacements.

CRACKLING OR HISSING

Electric water heaters are more prone to experiencing crackling or hissing sounds. While occasional crackling sounds are not usually an issue, a homeowner should pay attention if the sound is more persistent. It means sediment build-up that can obstruct the heating element’s functioning. Flushing the water heater annually is the best way to resolve the issue. For gas or oil-powered heaters, condensation on the burner may produce annoying crackling or hissing sounds.

POPPING OR KNOCKING

Popping or knocking is the most common sound a homeowner is most likely to hear from a water heater, especially in areas with a hard water supply. Excessive sediment or mineral deposits at the bottom of the tank cause steam bubbles to get trapped beneath and make popping sounds as the water heats up. Flush and drain the tank annually to prevent excessive sediment build-up. Aluminum anode rod’s higher exposure to alkalinity levels can also cause popping sounds. Replace the aluminum rod with a magnesium anode rod to fix the issue.

SCREECHING

A loose inlet control valve restricting the water flow or a problem with the unit’s components can cause the water heater to make a screeching or whistling sound. These noises from the water heater are never a good sign if fully opening the valve doesn’t solve the issue. Contact a professional to avoid any risk.

HUMMING

A water heater can hum if the heating element becomes loose. When this happens, the water flowing around the heating element causes vibrations that create a humming noise. Generally, tightening the heating element should fix the issue and eliminate the humming noise.

RUMBLING

Sediment build-up is a common issue with tank water heaters. Like a few other water heater noises, rumbling results from mineral build-up. Rumbling sounds are a little more serious and indicate the build-up reaching a severe level and preventing the water heater from operating efficiently. Flush the tank as soon as possible to eliminate the build-up before it leads to other severe issues.

BANGING

Banging or water hammer is a standard water heater sound. It happens when the water stops or gets forced to change its direction due to system pressure. Water hammer is a serious issue and can even cause the pipe to burst. Contact a professional immediately for diagnosis and resolution.

TICKING

A sudden change in water pressure or loose pipe straps can lead to ticking noises from the water heater. Adjust the water pressure or increase the insulation around the water heater to prevent the issue.
